Biography

Storytelling across animation, games and worldbuilding

Hiroshi Takane is a Tokyo-born creative director, copywriter, screenwriter, producer and director with more than 20 years in story-driven animation, games, advertising and visual projects. He is the founder and CEO of Studio ONI, a Tokyo studio known for blending traditional Japanese ink painting with contemporary hand-drawn animation.

After studying in Canada and France, he graduated from the Japan Academy of Moving Images, founded by filmmaker Shohei Imamura, and began his career as a writer and director on projects including the award-winning interactive drama 428: Shibuya Scramble. As a screenwriter he has worked on Fire Emblem Fates, Fire Emblem Engage and the Ace Attorney series, and as a creative director with Supercell, NHK, Canon Marketing Japan, LEXUS, SONY, BABYMETAL and DeNA. Highlights include an ink-painting animation for Supercell’s Brawl Stars, worldbuilding and narrative for DeNA’s Wonderia YOKOHAMA, and The Tale of Nagamasa Azai and His Family, a permanent exhibition work tied to NHK’s Taiga Drama.

At Studio ONI he leads original IP and cross-cultural productions, including the flagship Operation ONI, inspired by ink painting, folklore, samurai legends and yokai. He lectures internationally on craftsmanship in the age of AI, sits on the international jury of The GIANT Hunt character design contest, and serves as The Film Co-Operative’s consultant for Japanese and Eastern markets, contributing creative input across our slate.
